For exercise, can you just hit something in the air? Or do you have to run also?

When I am at my grandmothers, I have two baby cousins who I spend a lot of time with and they have bouncy balls that I hit in the air, so I can practice volleyball for next season. Should I run after the balls also?

Sure, run after them! Any kind of physical exertion is good for you and you'll be better at Volleyball. Not the most powerful exercise, but exercise it is.

Don't you need to anyway? When you hit the balls, they go away from you. Or, if you are hitting them against a wall, you will probably need to "dance around" to meet the ball and hit it again. THAT would be exercise. Just hitting one straight up and catching it would be exercise, but not as much as going to "meet" the balls.

I think that it would be a good idea to run as well. Hitting the bouncy balls can act as a warm up session. Running is good as it improves your efficiency in the sport.
