How do I know it's the starter and not the alternator?

tried to jump the car off to no avail, battery has 13 amps showing...there is a clicking sound sometimes when you turn the key.I have a 2006 Chrystler sebring touring convertible

The clicking sound indicates that the starter is the one with a problem. The starter has a solenoid which will click; the alt provides power to the battery which in turn provides power to the starter. You need to have your car checked by a qualified mechanic.

your battery has a charge. that indicates to me that your alternator is charging your battery. the clicking sounds like a starter problem. Pep boys does free alternator testing ... I'm sorry, car problems are THE worst!

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid. to test an alternator in the car you start it and while it idles remove a cable from the battery, if it dies its bad, if it runs its good.

I'd say battery. The 13 you see is volts, not amps. If it shows 13 volts then the alternator charges fine, if it wasn't, the volts would be very low- or none. If it was the starter, it probably wouldn't click
It'd be worth it to have the battery tested

If it was the battery it would have started when he tried jumping it.

And 13 volts is perfectly normal for a battery.

Disregard the 13 bolts is normal, I misread your comment.
