I've found the best way to get ideas for landscaping is to go to some of the nicer neighborhoods and drive around. You'll see what plants, trees and scrubs do well. You can see layouts, flower beds that have stone accents, gravel, mulch, and borders. You know they probably paid a fortune for their landscaping. If you are willing to do the work yourself you could save a lot of money. Also, take a camera with you and take pictures of your favorites.
Go to your local nursery, don't go to a chain store/nursery, local nurseries know what does well in your area and the most common mistake people make is plant something that gets too big and have to take it out later. Find out how big the tree or shrub gets at it's adult size. If you like flowers ask what blooms in the summer and in the winter.
The best place to get good advice on landscaping, is a small local nursery. They usually have better quality plants and will give great deals if u by an entire landscape from them. Also small nurseries usually carry loose mulch. If they do you will get more for your money than bags at other large home improvement stores.
Go to a local Green house... they have plants , trees, etc... but also indoor store where you can buy gifts, get gardening goodies! If you live in florida there is a awesome greenhouse that sells wonderful stuff! greenhousegardenstore.com.... best places
