I'm 20,work full time, but have bad credit already due to hospital bills from having a baby with no insurance. how can I get a credit card ?

I only want one because I need to establish some good credit . I make more than enough at my job to pay a credit card bill , but my credit is terrible cause of these hospital bills, my cell phone contract , and $300 I owe to another bank I'm not longer with from when I was like 16-17 .

My suggestion is to take a while to make sure your feet are on the ground financially. Build up a savings account. Credit cards are extremely expensive to use, and you are very young to have the strength to control spending. I'm an old woman and I don't have any because I can't control my spending. Have a debit card so you can order on line, or don't have to try to write checks or carry cash. You won't need credit for a very long time. Suzie Orman has a secured card that might build your credit. It is complicated, I've read different opinions about her card. Maybe the bank you use will let you have a secured card. It's a start for some credit companies, but not for others. If you have a large enough savings account, you can use a large down payment on anything you want instead of credit. It's what worked for me.

You can apply for a card with a low credit limit. Most creditors will still give you a credit card with a $200 limit if you have bad credit. Just make sure you pay on time and keep paying it off to build your credit and try to pay on the medical bills.

There are different ways to get credit. Put a bill in your name, etc. Credit card, may not be best way. If you do I agree with luvpink84, get one that only gives you low limit to get yourself into bigger trouble.

one good way to get a card is to watch for department store sales that say you'll get a certain % off purchases if you sign up for a card at that store. if you are not on chex -systems because of the issue from your former bank;you can start a checking account with ATM access.the ATM card is only tied to your checking acct. but if you show good judgement with that; because it is backed by either Visa of Mastercard you will soon be allowed to get a credit card through your bank. it won't be a pre-paid card. it will be a real credit card. so there are two ways to get a card, and there are more as well. but this ought to get you started.

Pay off what you owe before looking at credit cards, that will improve your score. Then apply for a secured credit card from your bank. Use it wisely. Then if you have the self control, get a store card and use it wisely. Build up from there.
