What are some fun things I can do with my dog?

I have a male standard poodle named Leo. I live in town in a house that doesn't have hardly any yard so I take him on walks every day but he still has a lot of energy. I'm getting my things packed to move to a house with acreage that he can run around on but until then what are some ways I can exercise him that he will enjoy? I don't think he is getting enough exercise because he chews on everything and always wants to play. I want to be able to have different ways of exercising him so it doesn't get boring for me or for him. I want another dog. He would have a playmate so would this help any?

How old is Leo? I too have a standard poodle and he has a lot of bounce! He loves doing obedience work- more precision work than just being out for a walk. Perhaps you could find a training facility that teaches dog agility. Another option is to take your dig to a doggie daycare a couple days a week, where he will recieve structured play with other dogs. even the highest energy dog comes home happy and tired from daycare. As to the chewing, try to provide lots of appropriate items for chewing. Real bones aren't the best, even if dogs like them a lot. I like Kongs that you can stuff with food treats or even just Leo's regular dog food. If you are preparing for a move, dogs frequently are upset by that. All the boxes and shuffling of all the household contents confuses the dog. Things will settle down once you are settled. In the mean time, try to reassure Leo that you won't leave him behind. Having him in daycare while you are packing can be really helpful. Good luck! In my opinion, you can't get a better dog than a standard poodle.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. He is almost a year old and acts like a baby. What kind of treats can I use for Kongs? He has a problem with his esophagus and can't have very much dry food or a lot of dry treats.

I'm sure if you look on Kongs website you can find recipes, sometimes I mix kibble with peanut butter or just soak it in broth or even water to soften it. Then, you can freeze it for a dog that's teething or in hot summer weather. Leo could still be working on some of those stubborn rear molars. Sometimes young dogs that have never chewed on anything will get pretty destructive when those molars are coming in. He's a young intelligent dog from a highly social breed. I'll bet he'd LOVE daycare!

A frozen kong can provide entertainment for most of the day! With his esophageal issues I would never allow bones! What color is Leo? My Dyson is 5, and he's black. He's a certified therapy dog. Oh how I love that dog!

Are there any dog parks you can drive to? How about parks? Remote beaches or lakes? Dogs absolutely LIVE to run wild and free. You must teach him to come when called -- carry treats all the time. It takes time but there's nothing better than a dog that comes when called. It took my dog about 3 months of training for that but now she's right there when I call her. Drive out to the country and ask some land-owners if they mind if you and your dog hike in their field (providing there's no crops). Find a dirt road and hike with him-- those are usually pretty quiet. Let him run off-leash (after you know he'll come when called) and watch how he smiles and has so much fun being with you like that. If you walk him every day -- how long? An hour? That means 23 hours he's not doing much. I go to the butcher shop and buy "dog bones" which are knuckle bones -- my dog LOVES them. (I cook them first.)

Get a tennis ball or a frisbee and take him to a big park or any sort of field near your place where he can run around.
