.My 11 year old yellow lab started licking away all his hair on his left hip about 4 inches round. What should I do?

The circle of skin with no hair looks raw.

It could be a sign of pain. Make sure he's not limping on that leg. If he shows no other sign of pain, make sure he's not itchy!!!

Sounds like a hot spot. Go to the store and get hot spot treatment. Give your dog a really good bath with hypoallergenic shampoo, rinse him well, dry, apply hot spot treatment. Then when the treatment dries, apply vaseline to soothe and protect the skin.

The only way to know Is to have him examined by a vet. Could be a pain caused from an injury, hot spot, or even joint pain from arthritis. No one can diagnose without examining him.

I appreciate your response. I took him to the vet and had to leave him there as he had a fever of 103. I know he is getting the best care. Thank you.
