They are kept in small cages that don't allow them to move much and this is akin to a human living life in a cell. That makes animals stressed an unhappy. You can't keep them in a reasonably sized and suitable enclosure, as circus' travel and can't afford increased costs. Also, it is difficult to monitor the treatment of animals in a travelling circus, so cruelty and poor care are common.

The stress to an animal of being 'forced' to 'perform' unnaturally when surrounded by a huge, loud and active crowd is also a factor to be considered.

In short, the welfare of the animals used in circus acts is, in most cases if not all, below the standards generally accepted as being morally required.

Let's not also forget that circus' deal with wild animals - how they obtain them (consider the role of trapping, taking away freedom, killing of an infant's parents) should also be a moral concern.

The biggest reason is human life's you're taking wild animals like lions Tigers and elephants and putting them in high pressure situations. One could easily snap and kill no matter how tame you think they are there never going to loose there natural instincts. Example if an elephant has high Testosterone and the people are taking pictures and making him uncomfortable he could easily loose his control and stamped the crowd crush people maul people he has the potential to destroy the entire circus.

Most of the animals used in circuses are ones that would normally be roaming if left wild. To cage them seems cruel.

I grew up in a town that was a winter home for a circus. You could see them walking the elephants down a road so that got their exercise.

Would you like to be whipped and spend the rest of your life in a cage? And for what a few hours of entertainment. Animals deserve to be free in the wild not controlled by humans.
