whats the best temperature to keep house in summer to save money (central air)

Report as

It depends on how hot your summer is. I keep mine at 74 except on the hottest days when I put it on 76.

The important thing is to remember to turn your central air up or down never off.

Of course, you save the most money by setting it so high that it never runs. You really have to decide how much heat you're willing to deal with. There isn't a temperature (around room temperature) that stands out as a money saving sweet spot.

Lol, those are the temps that cause it to cut on about twice an hour. My system is old and if it's on constantly it freezes!

Also, if it's 100 degrees outside, that's pretty cool.

So u telling me to never turn my system off ?

That's what I've always heard here. On one notable situation I saw my boss scolded by an A/C tech. when I was 16.

The smart thermostats that you can program to change temps while you're gone help a ton unless you have a heat pump.
Our solution (because I hate the power company) is we keep our AC on 81*, sounds high to most but we work outside so it feels good when we come in. We turn off AC at night and open windows, we have fans in the windows and a ceiling fan over the bed. During the day, as soon as the temp gets to 79* we shut the windows and turn on the air.
You don't have to be as extreme, you can set your AC at 74 or 76 but shutting it off at night saves us a fortune.
