What holistic ingredient neutralizes the gassy effects of beans? I have IBS and would like to start eating beans again.

Dear Sisric,

Here are a few tips I learned from macrobiotic cooking...although I do not know if they are enough to counteract IBS.

1. Soak the beans before cooking, and then drain off the soaking water.
2. Cook the beans with a strip of the seaweed kombu.
3. Use aduki (or adzuki) beans...they are the least irritating to the GI tract.

Adding a teaspoon of baking soda or vinegar near the end of the cooking process can reduce gas from the beans. You can also use ginger or garlic. Soaking the beans before cooking them is another method. http://www.ehow.com/info_8691834_secret-neutralizing-gas-cooking-beans.html has more information.
