I don't understand why people are so against gay marriage, and just homosexuality in general. Can someone give me a valid reason?

and no "because god said so" is not a valid reason. not everyone is Christian remember that. I am Jewish and I personally believe that being gay is wrong, but who am I to say that someone else can't be gay? it's not my place to moderate love.

It's prejudice, pure and simple. Denying equal treatment, rights or freedoms for no other reason than they are different than you are, is prejudice. A shameful condition in what was rumored to be a free country.

Because people are close-minded and stupid like that...haha well some people just don't know how to accept new ideas. In my opinion, being dead-set against homosexuality is going AGAINST God, because he wouldn't want us to be judgmental and cruel to others. He wants us all to love each other for who we are. Saying mean things about gay people is still a sin, even if in your religion they are not accepted. I want people to be more open-minded.

I think it's a control issue. It was a LONG time ago that being married gave the spouse the survivors rights of the others death benefits. This used to be the BIG reason why people got married. To give benefits to the spouse. Now the 'conventional' relationships it appears that the same benefits that have been given to male/female relationships will be given to all. It is right? Of course. BUT you are bucking over 200 years of womens equality that fought hard to get what they have, now it is getting pushed onto LGBT people too in (relatively) the blink of an eye.

I say this on the matter being gay is not a crime and is some ones born right to decide to be gay. Do I fully support it no? I say they have a right to it and a right to marry just as I have a right to be strait and to marry. And I would hope they can understand that a religious leader can refuse to marry them due to conflicts with the religions beliefs. And I would ask that they not practice it in my home out of courtesy. but in the end I nether support it nor go against it all I can do is say I love them and let them live their life just as I live my life.

That's a bit ignorant. People do not decide who they are physically and emotionally attracted to. I do not 'decide' to love my wife. I can't just wake up tomorrow and decide not to love her any more. Gay people can choose not to act on attraction, on love, but why the hell should they?

I did not mean it like that I mean they still have to interpret their feelings for someone at the beginning. is it true love of or is just a strong friendship or connection you share? I did not say that they should not be able to love the person they love or for it to be lingual for them to marry I simply said they should respect a religious leaders decision on if he or she would marry them or not. I just think a religious leader should be able to up hold their beliefs but should also understand and to tolerate guy marriage and that guy’s should be able to marry but understand the religious view of others. Does this make since to you?

Yes, and I agree with you almost completely. I don't think gay people should respect religious leaders who ostracize them, but they have little choice but to accept that that many religious people have irrational and outdated beliefs about their sexuality.

I only took issue with your assertions that one decides one's own sexuality. This is a common misconception amongst Christians, despite common sense and the readily available evidence to the contrary. It is one of the flase claims people use in attempts to justify prejudice and deny equal rights, and should therefore be challenged.

I realize that, as a Christian, my views on this surprises a lot of people, but I don't think "sin" comes in degrees. Yes, God says a man shall not lie with a man, but he also says to love thy neighbor. I take that to mean we are to love and accept all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, etc. So for anyone to not love and accept their gay neighbor, that's not adhering to the tenets of true Christianity, is it I'm pretty sure the Bible does not say to "love only those whose ideals you share".

God's word teaches us to love our neighbor. However, it also teaches us to hate what is bad and love what is good. Certainly then, we should have love for our neighbor, but if our neighbor practices what is bad in the eyes of God, then we too, must hate the bad practices of our neighbor. This can be done while still having love for our neighbor. Out of love for our neighbor, we share with them the counsel from God which can move a person to turn around from activities that are condemned by God. If our neighbors house was on fire, love for our neighbor would move us to alert them and help them escape the disaster. Ultimately though, it's really up to the neighbor to act on the warning that is given. Of course we could drag them out of their house to save them from the fire that is burning their house down, but we cannot drag or force anyone to listen and obey God.

Not everyone has the same self centered points of view based upon thousands of years old Religious mores and stories.

Sorry, kids, but homosexuality is actually an advantage to societal species, as it increases the survival of the young of that group (extra adult care, since they don't have their own children, adoption of orphaned members), and the female siblings of homosexual members of many of these species are shown to be more fertile than others in the group (since siblings share DNA this moves their genetic material forward).

Learn biology before trying to speak about it.

No the 1 represents the male gender 0 represents the female I have nothing against female they are the equal counterpart of man they balance each other it is impossible to live life without the female gender that's why in an all female or all male environment the frog will change sexes to continue life if this makes it less sexist try this equation
M+M=Nr where as m=male gender Nr=no reproduction
Report as
Your "equation" makes zero sense. Biology doesn't work that way. Not every member of a species needs to reproduce for it to be successful. In fact this would be detrimental due to overpopulation and competition for resources.

Homosexuality survives in so many species in part because it is built in population control. Since less than ten percent of any given population is homosexual, I don't know how you think this is harmful.

Not to mention that homosexuals routinely use the same medical methods to reproduce as heterosexuals, and adopt.

As a matter of fact the punishment of this abomination is death. We do not hate gay PEOPLE. We hate the sin. If they repent, there is no issue. Homosexuality is a choice just as all sexual acts, with the possible exception of forced rape, are a choice. And if you ascribe yourself to any of the Abrahamic faiths then you must abide by the teachings of the same. You cant pick and choose this part or that part while rejecting another part. There's a misconception that marriage is the property of the church.
Judging by the Q&A on Ask over the past few months many Christians seem to think that marriage is a Christian sacrament (which it can be, but not exclusively) and some have expressed the idea that allowing gays to marry defiles that sacrament.

This is muddled thinking, of course, because marriage has been around longer than Christianity and exists within and outside of ALL religions. But that view has been expressed here many times.

Basically it's prejudice combined with ignorance.

The reason of marriage in the first place (and back before we had such a messed up society) was to have children, and to be able to make the sacred covenants to return to Heaven. Wether you're "religious" or not, way back when everyone was. Why do you think it says in god we trust on our currency? Cuz a few people believed in God? No. In Homosexual marriage, you can not have children, or be married the way those of biblical times were. Marriage is between a man AND a woman. And before I get a "everyone should be able to do what makes them happy" comment attack, I don't hate gays I just don't believe that it is the correct or godly way.

Biblically marriage was between a man and as many women as he could afford. Or man and the widow of his dead brother. Or a rapist and his victim. And women never had a choice in the matter, and were bought and sold into marriage.

Not to mention that marriage is a civil matter- a ceremony performed in a church is not recognized as a marriage without legal license from the state, and millions of marriages don't involve religion at all.

Therefore it doesn't matter what your religion thinks, the legality of marriage and who gets married is a secular, state matter.

Marriage is a legal contract and everyone should have equal "rights" regarding it. You can have a religious ceremony (or "rite"), but until you file your marriage license with your state, you will not be married.

Now what all this is coming down to is that same-sex couples simply want the same rights as hetero couples. They want a say-so in the medical treatments of their partners should something happen to them (same as hetero couples), health insurance, tax benefits, etc.

If you are not in a same-sex relationship, then gay marriage has absolutely no effect on you...period.

You can choose to bring up your religious feelings regarding it, but if you are not in said relationship, it is none of your business.

Most of the hate is purely affiliated with religious thinking. Homosexuality and marriage has been around long before christianity or any other "popular" religious affiliation. It is not going anywhere.

As a Jewish person, you must certainly know that the act of homosexuality is a sin punishable by death. It was something detestable to God and was also to be something detestable to his people, the Israelites. They were to stone those committing the act until they were dead. Why do you as a Jewish person not feel the same way as God and the Israelites did when God, through Moses, gave you the law? What has changed with God and his people that makes you think such behavior is now acceptable?

True Christians just don't behave like that because instead, they imitate Christ. Mankind is not capable of proper judgment. That authority has been given to Christ by his father, the Almighty God. Christians trust in God. They look him for direction and do their best to live by Godly principals that are found in the bible. Other so called "Christians" do join the battles of this world. Misled into thinking they can make some kind of a difference, they fight battles, imagining they will be able to fix something that God has condemned. Instead of praying for God's Kingdom to come, they make vain attempts at repairing the governments of this world, which will be crushed shortly. There was a time when God had his people put certain ones to death, but that is not the way for a true Christian. We love our neighbors and want to help them get free from this world, because those who make themselves part of the world by voting or appointing its leaders, share the responsibility of all that goes wrong with it. If this was the way we here on Earth lived our lives how would there be any babies born out of natural child birth? Now back to the God thing. While he was here on Earth he told the disciples that when they go out to preach in the world they hated me so they will hate you also. Because Jesus spoke the truth most people don't want to hear the truth because they want to live how they want to with no rules. Homosexuality has been since before Jesus came. God his father was so displeased with this sin that he destroyed 2 whole cities. We as his children are going to agree with our father in Heaven. We don't determine right from wrong using a bible. If we did then we would be in all sorts of problems.

For example, the bible says to respect your elders, but doesn't even put child sexual abuse in it's 10 commandments. Most sane people here would put that as No.1 but your god seems to have forgotten it.
Report as
Jesus said " He answered, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
To not abuse children falls under "love your neighbor."
If we don't have the moral code from the Bible, then everything is up in the air as to what is right and wrong.
Report as
I think you will find that child molesters often do love children, or their neighbor's children.

I'm sorry if that sounds like i am making light of it, but there are people who argue that children are sexual and the age of consent should be scrapped. So you have to spell it out.

But you are on the right track, you worked out that it was wrong from "love your neighbor", or do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Your problem is that this is not unique to the bible. It is a universal idea that is natural to us and predates Jesus. And the bible doesn't actually explain why it works, while secular thinking does.
So it is possible to work out right from wrong with a few simple principle which are not unique to the bible. This is what we have always done, we don't need the bible.

Homosexuality undermines the very fabric of society, which is founded on the traditional family unit. It is a perversion of nature. Let's face it; no kid wants to have two fathers or two mothers, they want a father and a mother. They recognize the beautiful wholeness that the love between a man and a woman has. Men and women are like two different but equal halves of the same whole: they complete each other, but two of the same halves just won't fit right.

My question is, do the people who come here and say that it is unnatural, a choice, doesn't make sense, or spout off about the religious origins of marriage -- when they are told how demonstrably wrong they are, do they ever think, "I should really go read a science book"?
