This is also a feature I'd like to see, but it won't ever happen. They don't want us to be "social".

We do allow members to post off-topic chat within comments. There are plenty of other social sites available, and while we want members to be friendly and get to know each other, the main purpose of Ask is to ask questions and get answers. If we added an actual chat component, then people would spend time chatting rather than asking/answering.

Its always good to expand......

Expanding can be good, but not if it's in a way that will defeat the original purpose of the site. ;)

The truth is that we really don't want to be a social network, though we are always open to suggestions, which is why I linked the Feedback form.

Ask was not designed to be a social networking site, and as such there has not really been a need for any sort of messaging feature. If you'd like to make suggestions regarding features you'd like to see on the site, you are welcome to use our Feedback form... http://feedback.ask.com/
