Why do people think Edward Snowden is a hero?

This idea kind of upsets me but I just want to know why he's considered a hero.

Report as

Cause he's showing the world what a lying, cheating ,dishonest, horrible thing the US Govt. is.

Except everyone knew this though. Don't tell me you are surprised by this.
Report as
I'm not one bit surprised, the great thing is there's no denying it now. What you know is one thing, what you prove is another.
Report as
The other countries do the same things, but if one of their citizens, blue the whistle, they would be considered traitors, and executed as spy's,when caught. Even those who supported them would be arrested. The ones who support Snowden, should be glad their Americans, and free to say what they want.
Report as
I meant, Blew the whistle.!

Except everyone knew.
Report as
Actually, from my perspective, some people that already suspected this before all this happen were deemed kinda crazy. So, not everyone knew.
Report as
EVERYONE KNEW!! Everyone knew. Do you have any idea how upset I am about this?!
Report as
No, "everyone" did not know. It's a stretch to say that you know this for a fact. Are you supposed to be venting by saying this?
Report as
No I'm not venting I'm very upset. This guy didn't do it to tell everyone! He only did it so the he and many others would try to overthrow the government. That's all everyone cares about nowadays!
Report as
And this is your conclusion, yes? He told people the truth. Something the gov doesn't like to do, apparently. People don't want to overthrow the government. (Can't speak for all.) But most certainly do want to get the corrupt and lying people out of it.
Report as
Maybe not everyone wants to overthrow the government but that's what I hear people talk about. They talk about how the government is treating the people unfairly but I see them having everything a job, a cell phone that text, money. I don't have any of these things yet all these people want is the government to do things there way and I hate them for that.
Report as
Because people are upset with the way they are running things. The government is supposed to be for the people, not against the people. The people that are saying Edward is a hero obviously would like to keep their privacy. If what the government was doing was so great, then it would have stopped the Boston bombing. Can't really hate people for not wanting to give up their privacy.
Report as
To ARobb: I had a hunch much of this was going on anyway. So in a sense "I knew" I would be curious what you make of my response to this.
Report as
My response is that I never was a victim of the government, it's the people I'm a victim of. I'm not saying all of the people nor am I in favor of the government but there's something wrong with this society and no one bother's to notice it.
Report as
The rest of the governments, weren't admiting they were doing it, why should we, should we be that stupid.
Report as
And I guess you're one of those "nothing to hide" people? I got nothing to hide either, but guess what? I don't like the thought of people looking at my stuff.

He exposed government, which is trying to hide everything. He did this to his great personal expense. That makes a hero in many eyes.

Because in this day and age of international terrorism, most of it directed toward the United States' interests, there are many on the left, in their naively and often ignorance, who genuinely believed that the US government wasn't keeping an eye on it's own citizens, sometimes stretching (or if you like beyond) the letter of the law. It was already common knowledge that the NSA had the ability to read our text messages whenever it wanted to and I'm quite sure it did. So now it stored them, as well as our emails too. So what? It comes down to privacy versus security and I obviously lean toward the latter.

Do you want to know why this upsets me so much or would you rather label someone you don't know for overthrowing our government?
Report as
Security is the excuse dictatorships usually use.

Loss of privacy on that scale is not worth the benefits security.. and they know it, which is why they did it on the snide.
Report as
They did it on the snide so as not to let al Qaeda know. (You remember them?) I was already aware the NSA could and were reading out text messages - saw it on a PBS documentary. And dictatorships? I had deliberately used the word "balance" as to our privacy vis-a-vis security. I do not see the scales tipping in one particular direction significantly at any time in our lifetime. There are enough checks and balances in the U.S. Constitution to prevent that, not to mention a great, vast majority of the population against that. My main worry is those that want to kill us. All of us. By any means they can.

Interesting question. I don't know what to make of the guy. I certainly do not see him as a villain, but I'm not sure of his "hero" status yet. I do find it a little odd that people are surprised by govt. spying. I have a hunch, ever since the Oklahoma City bombing, Uncle Sam has been keeping tabs on many of us very carefully. If not "Big Brother" certainly "Big Business" is keeping tabs on you as well. Herbert Hoover did a somewhat decent job on keeping tabs on us even before the Internet. You can safely bet the "propeller heads" that have designed much of this software have either for their own amusement or for other reasons written certain code in the algorithms to make spying much easier. (Original response CONT.) Believe it or not, your privacy is basically obsolete, unless you have the skills/technology to take counter measures, which I don't have. Now many people who supposedly "have nothing to hide" may not be too concerned about this. Where such an attitude might come back to bite them is if and when they say something publicly, denouncing this or that, when someone is able to dig up electronically what sites you have been visiting on the Internet, what you bought, maybe even eventually digging up entire e-mails that used to be only for those with a "need-to-know-only" basis, if that makes any sense.
Report as
If I ever have the desire or means to run for public office or even manage to become someone who is fixed in the public eye like Paula Deen, someone is going to find out "Jebidiah's real name/identity" assuming someone hasn't done so already. Much of what I have said on this site, would probably be a PR managers nightmare. (Even the stuff that somehow was "omitted")
Report as
But now people are taking this the wrong way, I hear talk of revolution and overthrowing the government and they don't care what concerns everyone else but themselves. Oh sure what the government is doing is wrong, but now people want to stop this for their own benefit. I always knew the government was surveying me and I didn't care because the government isn't hurting me. I'm not a victim of the government I'm a victim of it people.
Report as
To ARob: I have a hunch, "Uncle Sam" is NOT going to go anywhere any time soon. Do I know this for a fact? No. The future is full of surprises. Yes history does tend to repeat "PATTERNS" but within those patterns are twists and turns that will make many lose a lot of sleep in anticipation for what is going to happen "next" in the story. Whether "Jimbo" (Jim Morrison) was correct or not about "The End". The future IS uncertain for many of us, so we just have to let it "roll baby roll" roll baby roll... All night long"

I just hope that everyone government or people just realize what is right from wrong.

Jebidiahcrackercorn: you want to overthrow the government? Be my guest, but ask yourself this, how long will it be before the people want to overthrow you too?

This is the End! My only friend, the End.

To ARobb: No, I currently have no desire to overthrow the government. Even if I did, I certainly wouldn't be admitting such here.

I should also add that for those of you "with nothing to hide" are engaged in CYBERBULLYING, you may want to stop your antics now. For others of you, it is too late, the law is getting ready to crack down on you as I write these words and you read them.

He is a hero in a way for exposing the government. However he has made his way to somewhat enemy countries-Russia, China and they won't extradite him. A little more than suspicious. I pray and hope he is not giving away too secret information and data with other countries. I thought he was a hero for informing US citizens but after his recent actions I strongly distrust him.

He only wants to overthrow the US government because he thinks it has gone way out of hand but the way he carried out his actions, he doesn't care about the civilians living in the US.

I have no idea. He told China and Russia, two of our biggest political rivals, about our security shortcomings, and he stiffed the American people. We had to find out via the media AFTER he commited treason. He should have found a way to tell us first, that way he would've gotten his message out without betraying America.

I am not so sure he really cares about America.

And that's why we need to send someone to Russia (or did he finally make it out of there) to make him disappear. Then fix our leaks. Preferably at the same time. NOW.

Judging by your other comments, you obviously don't care what those scumbags do. There are people that do care, in fact 85% of the population doesn't trust the government anymore (Rasmussen poll). Those are the people that care about it. That is why he is a hero. Don't take loss of freedom lightly, because one day you will wake up.... And you will be a slave.

Report as
So are you saying you're trying to overthrow the government so that it's your way?
Report as
If you are, you might as well say you will because the government will find out sooner or later.
Report as
If you're going to fight the government just because the government isn't giving what you want, just so you know that I may have to fight you. And weather I'm fighting on the wrongs side or not at least I'd be doing something, something to bring meaning to life, you don't care about that because all you believe is that you are being treated unfairly when you have a job and you're getting money. To you it's not about anyone else but only you and that's why I hate people like you.

Man dude, you have really gone off the deep end this time...........

And what does a job, fighting the government and all that have to do with not wanting the Feds spying on you?

Jeez man calm down

And just FYI if Americans ever HAD to fight the government, it would be to preserve the freedom that (at least some people love).

It's not about freedom, everyone I know wants to have a goddamn revolution just because their life is crappy in which they have everything. I am just sick of it. It's not about the people it's always about themselves.

If Snowden was a hero, he wouldn't be in Russia .

@arobb I cant vouch for everyone, but everyone I know say the exact opposite (most of them are war vets so its hard to say they don't care about America).

I hope he gets asylum. Venezuela will probably take him. How about James Clapper lying to congress? He is a villain. He lied about "not spying on Americans". He got caught lying. Thats exactly what Eddie was warning us about and how we the people are being deceived and lied to. Watch out for those little drones.

Without Edward Snowden we not even know that our rights as americans had been violated. FISA courst wht a laugh? Haigh lied to congress no congressional over site. Verizon's legal team is trying to get this before the Supreme Court. Edward Snowden has not outed any agents or our military but has defended our constitutiona liberties which our own government seems to ignore.
