The IOC are streamlining the number of Summer Olympic events due to cost. "Core" sports will continue indefinitely but "Non-core" sports will have to compete to be included on a games-by-games basis.
Wrestling was previously one of 26 core sports but they needed to trim the core sports down to 25 and, after a major study (looking at things such as the success of the various sports at the most recent Olympics and levels of worldwide grassroots support), wrestling was the sport that lost out.
This means wrestling would have to compete with many other non-core events for inclusion in the Summer Olympics so may not appear in the 2020 or future games.
