Dude honestly its all about how passionate you are about music, why you doing it, how serious your band is about it, how serious you are about it and how good the people are who make up the band... If you can answer all those, you'll know if you'll be a success...
It isn't really a question of how you get it started its a question of how to keep it going. I was a singer for a garage band once and our "director " was also a singer. DO NOT INVOLVE the director in performing, chances are he will base decisions on wether or not it will benifit him. I got tossed aside and told I was useless and then I was replaced by his crush so if anything make sure that you have a director or that it is a team effort and not one performer is making decisions. As for your name... it will come in time:)
For the name, try maybe something foreign; I used La Bella Fiore, which is Beautiful Flower in Italian. please do NOT steal that one. So yeah look up foreign words that roll off the tongue nicely. Good luck :)
Choose a group name for your band...For instance "The Fools" as opposed to "Johnny and "The Fools. Remember you are a group. Work together cohesively. Become a well oiled machine. Vote on issues that you can't settle among the group. Democracy works,. Johnny should not get all the credit or top billing .
You'll need ~25 songs before you gig, I'd plan on a year to accumulate that many and get good enough for people to come hear you. The more dance music, the easier it will be to get gigs - you have to be something very special for people to pay a cover charge just to sit and listen to you play.
