What is the deadly disease that causes you to not be able to move your limbs and die at a sooner age?

My father just called me and told me all of this, but forgot what the disease was called and couldn't pronounce it even if he did remember. I just want to know what it's called and any information or advice I can get about it.
He is a fairly overweight, but strong, 52 year-old man. He eats a lot, but is healthy in every other way. He often has trouble getting up and sitting down (also grunting in pain from trying), breaths heavily, and easily has heat strokes if in the sun for too long (partially because he's over weight and he was born in Massachusetts). Any help would be wonderful!
