Well, here is some of the most important things you need; - A cage (the bigger, the better) - Some furnitures to the cage (like a house/bed, food bowl, wheels etc.) - Sawdust/hay to cover the floor of the cage/so the hamster will have somewhere to sleep - A water bowl/dispenser - Food (would recommend some mix of different seeds, but sunflower seeds are often a favourite) - And, of course, the hamster ;-)
you'd need a cage of course, food(i would suggest a mix variety of bag, also natura) a wheel for exercise(toys for example) water dispenser, food bowl or a place made specifically for their food so the cage would not be a mess, and of course hay or whatever you may like for their bedding so the cage would not be too cold or just for it to be comfortable for them. and extras such as cage cleaner,(smells so good) found at petco. **--rodent exp. best of luck, evelyn mouse.
Cage: I would suggest either an aquarium (20 gallon "long" or larger) or making your own out of a storage bin. It's soooo much cheaper and easier than those expensive plastic cages! Plus remember, your hamster needs LOTS of room to run which those little plastic cages just won't provide. Plus, bigger cage = cleaning less frequently.
Wheel: absolute necessity. Get a Wodent Wheel or a Silent Spinner, they are very quiet. 8" or bigger for Syrians, 6 1/2" or bigger for dwarfs.
Well everyone has seemed to cover the basics but here's a few tips tips to keep your hammy, happy and healthy ;) - when you first get it, give it 24 alone without touching or holding it. They need to adjust to their new home - change the cage every 4 or 5 days. I know on the package, it says once every week, but the acid in the urine can harm the hamster -always pick up your hamster with two hands and always make sure all four of his paws are on your hands. If you pick him up by his ribs, he can't breathe -don't treat your pet like a toy. They are small and need to be treated with respect:) -make sure it always has CLEAN water. -have fun and play with your hamster whenever possible, but don't wake him from his sleep:)
