I see American Flags planted on Mars, American based on the moon. I have a very optimistic view of this country, in 50 years ... in 100 years, this will still be the greatest country on earth, leading the way in space exploration.
Every generation thinks that the US is on the verge of collapse, it has been this way since shortly after we gained our independence from England. Excluding factors like global warming and being closer to the end of the carbon-age. Our nation, all nations, are heading more and more toward a corporate oligarchy. This means that the needs, profits, and overall well being of the corporation will take front seat over those of the individual citizen. It has been built into our system in the last few decades, warnings such as that given by President Eisenhower in his farewell address, mantras like "whats good for GM is good for the nation" and the lack of accountability for the banking failures of 2007, all act as testimony to this fact. Also we must consider our political campaign finance laws and decisions like the SCOTUS ruling of Citizens United vs The FEC. If left unchanged it is a guarantee that big money and special interests will determine the future of this nation, not we the people.
I believe in two theories. 1) America will be taken over by china/Russia in Nuclear warfare. 2) America will fall to pieces along with all the rest of the world except for the Middle East (debt/corruption). I believe in this theory because in the bible; the book of revelation, America is never mentioned once in the rapture (end times). It all started in the Middle East, it's gonna end there too.
Technological powerhouse, leading the way in quantum computing. With it comes major improvements in communications, medicine, travel, and space exploration. Mathematically, we will be able to reach newer heights along with physics. 3D printing will become the new meta for self-sustained manufacturing. Current space elevator programs will probably start maturing as we venture into a new era. People from the middle of nowhere will say otherwise, but I see stuff like these in the works every single day. We have 12 year olds inventing flashlights that's powered from the heat of your hands. The world is moving on, don't get stuck behind.

This country became great, because of its people, they pursued the American dream, and the government ran the country. All was well, until the Gov. Decided to run our lives, and big business found that money could control the politicians,to the point, where they would represent business, and not the people. I don't see this changing within a 50 year time span without some real legitimate leadership. But, where do we find it.all that said, I still believe America will endure.
The science fiction writer, William Gibson, has created in his books a vision of a not-very-distant future that I found so compelling that it is hard for me to imagine the future any other way now. Check out Neuromancer, Mona Lisa Overdrive, and more. I think he nailed it.
