How do you envision America in 50 years?

seems like at the rate we're going there won't be an America...

Report as
Jorgensen

It'll be a socialist country pretty soon. With Obama and all the extreme democrats. With gay marriage slowly coming in. And we're losing our freedom rapidly.

Your so RIGHT! (SAD)
Report as
The freedom to be a homophobe, you mean?
Report as
Don't see what gay marriage has to do with becoming a socialist country, but whatever. The rest makes sense.
Report as
Just out of curiosity, what exactly does the term socialism mean to you? Can you define it?
Report as
Jorgensen
A little less exaggerated than communism.
Report as
OK, so what does the term communism mean to you? What is the distinction between them?
Report as
Jorgensen
Why are you questioning me?
Report as
Well, because this IS Ask.com and I'm trying to learn something.
Report as

Is it what I said about gay marriage that you're questioning me?
Report as
No. Though now I am curious about why you would think so.
No, what I am interested in is how words, particularly words relating to politics, seem to have lost their formal, concensual , dictionary meaning these days. They seem to mean very different things to different people .And in some instances, have lost any real meaning at all. They have become simple, all-purpose insults. So, I am curious about what people really mean when they use them.
And, don't worry, you're not the only one I am asking

I see American Flags planted on Mars, American based on the moon. I have a very optimistic view of this country, in 50 years ... in 100 years, this will still be the greatest country on earth, leading the way in space exploration.

Every generation thinks that the US is on the verge of collapse, it has been this way since shortly after we gained our independence from England.
Excluding factors like global warming and being closer to the end of the carbon-age.
Our nation, all nations, are heading more and more toward a corporate oligarchy. This means that the needs, profits, and overall well being of the corporation will take front seat over those of the individual citizen. It has been built into our system in the last few decades, warnings such as that given by President Eisenhower in his farewell address, mantras like "whats good for GM is good for the nation" and the lack of accountability for the banking failures of 2007, all act as testimony to this fact. Also we must consider our political campaign finance laws and decisions like the SCOTUS ruling of Citizens United vs The FEC.
If left unchanged it is a guarantee that big money and special interests will determine the future of this nation, not we the people.

Accurate and concise. An excellent summation, as always, caluvox.. But I'm afraid it's already an accomplished fact. Perhaps the thing to do at this point would be to incorporate One would have more rights and protections under the law than mere citizens have, apparently.
As a global phenomenon, the rise of the corporatist state has the aura of a slow motion train wreck about it. A tragic inevitability. John Ralston Saul wrote that, " the corporate model is structured in precisely such a way as to marginalize ethics" . He made a good case for it. What do you think?

I believe in two theories.
1) America will be taken over by china/Russia in Nuclear warfare.
2) America will fall to pieces along with all the rest of the world except for the Middle East (debt/corruption). I believe in this theory because in the bible; the book of revelation, America is never mentioned once in the rapture (end times). It all started in the Middle East, it's gonna end there too.

Who is this Christ person?
Report as
Some guy who will supposedly come down and ruin the lives of the many for the sake of the few.
Report as
@Soozee: I agree that could happen, but how do you know he will come within 50 years?
Report as
He will not come for the sake of a few, he will come for ALL THAT BELIEVE! It is never too late! The way you know he will be here within the next 50 years is by the signs of the times. Everything that is happening in the Middle East is leading up to his return. It's all in the Bible.

Technological powerhouse, leading the way in quantum computing. With it comes major improvements in communications, medicine, travel, and space exploration. Mathematically, we will be able to reach newer heights along with physics. 3D printing will become the new meta for self-sustained manufacturing. Current space elevator programs will probably start maturing as we venture into a new era. People from the middle of nowhere will say otherwise, but I see stuff like these in the works every single day. We have 12 year olds inventing flashlights that's powered from the heat of your hands. The world is moving on, don't get stuck behind.

This country became great, because of its people, they pursued the American dream, and the government ran the country. All was well, until the Gov. Decided to run our lives, and big business found that money could control the politicians,to the point, where they would represent business, and not the people. I don't see this changing within a 50 year time span without some real legitimate leadership. But, where do we find it.all that said, I still believe America will endure.

The science fiction writer, William Gibson, has created in his books a vision of a not-very-distant future that I found so compelling that it is hard for me to imagine the future any other way now. Check out Neuromancer, Mona Lisa Overdrive, and more. I think he nailed it.
