Does it hurt your feelings, when people are rude to you for no sensible reason, or do you get mad?

do you just ignore them? what if it happens more than once? is there a point at which you stop trying to be understanding, if they're going through rough times, and just let them have it, or just keep trying to be nice? what would you do?

Report as

If a dog barks at me I don't become upset. That's what dogs do.
If an idiot is rude to me why should I get upset? It's what idiots do.
But I do agree with Reesinator. I don't waste my time or company on them.

You may want to get used to it. You have a very long user name and it makes it easier to type. Just do not get confused when we refer to Sass or Sassy as she is another person entirely.

And it looks like by your profile that you are new so welcome. You might want to fill in your profile a bit so we know a little bit about you. Remember no names or numbers, nothing personal. Enjoy!

Report as
Witte, you are cracking me up here.
Report as
For me SAS is Special Air Service, the Red Beret brigade.
When I was in the army reserve I did a two week unarmed combat course with a commando unit. Those guys know how to inflict PAIN. One time I'll tell you about "crawling the gauntlet".

And W, when I'm not abbreviating you to a single initial I get caught up with Little White Worm which is considerably longer.
Report as
Taise, :8))!!
Dodgy, I like "little white worm" it always brings a smile to my face.:).
Anything's fine...just don't whistle..ha,ha..
Report as
Crawling the gauntlet... that'd be an interesting one I bet..
You lasted 2weeks with those guys? Wow! impressive!
Report as
There wasn't one of us who didn't end up with the doctor at least once.

If we didn't do as well as we were supposed to, or were a bit slow, the instructor lined everybody up in two lines and you had to crawl backwards through the gauntlet while they punched and kicked you. If they didn't put enough effort into it they got to go through next. It's surprising how quickly you can crawl backwards when you have that kind of incentive.
Report as
SarcasticAndSweet
Wow, Dodgy! That's hard to even imagine. Well, my thoughts about SAS are not as impressive as yours and Wittepier's - I keep thinking of SAS shoes. You know, the support kind? My Mom is a retired nurse and that's the brand she always wore!!

Yes it hurts my feelings. I think it's perfectly normal to get your feelings hurt by rude people.
If it's someone I know I let it slide for a few times. I talk to someone else about it If it continues I sometimes talk to them about it. I say, "It hurt my feelings when you _______." But that is very hard to do.
If someone I don't even know is rude I don't do anything at first. I'm too shocked. Maybe I'll never see them again, so what can I do? But if I can I talk to them later I say, "You were very rude to me. You said, _______."
But I'm calm about it. If I let them have it, (which, of course, is what I want to do) I just feel bad later on. Because I was as rude to them as they were to me.
Hope I helped!

Hurt my feelings? No. But I do try to avoid them. If everybody avoids rude people, they either get lonely and ease up, or they are happy in their solitude and live more or less at peace until they finally die alone. But if the rudeness occurs rarely or is context-specific, I try to be understanding, especially if I know the person's circumstances. However, once it becomes clear that the rude people are getting off on their rudeness, then I am more than happy to deprive them of their joy by ceasing all contact with them.

I don't know if it helps, but older people sometimes lose so much of the little patience they once had that they can't control themselves any more. What I mean by that is it isn't because of anything you do, it is because he has lost control of himself with everyone and everything. Have you tried talking to him about how you feel around him? I wonder if he even is aware of the pain he causes you. Maybe he thinks you know it's just how he communicates...

Report as
It isn't easy Ravin...I'm sitting in a mud hole surrounded by chicken poo...been here for 19 hours...to get loaded...I'm desperately wanting to be mean and rude to these idiots that do not have facilities available for truck drivers, no food or drinks available, and take great pleasure in holding us up here...making smart alec comments and "joking" about what they are doing. I'm pretty sure that once I do get released to leave that I'm gonna break my cardinal rule and say something to them...or maybe I'll run my 80,000lb vehicle over the keep off grass sign and make some deep tracks in their pretty green grass...then I can go...Ooops...;)
Report as
Lady, remember the old adage: Keep smiling, make them wonder what you're up to. Small minds. You could vote them idiot of the day. That's how my husband helped me get over road rage. If someone was really stupid, so many to choose from, I could say "Idiot of the day." Really silly, but for some reason, I'd feel like I'd accomplished something against that person and I could let it go. Weird, huh?
Report as
See now TL in my head I'm still thinking that the sign/grass idea sounds good.... guess I might have a slight evil streak in me. Once again it's probably a good thing I don't drive a truck! lol Too bad truck tires can take off fast enough to toss a little muddy chicken poo their way....... just sayin!
Report as
Not weird at all koichan...I do the same thing. I have "pet names" for all sorts of drivers...cars and trucks alike. Road rage is the one thing I cannot do. Doesn't matter how angry I want to get, I just can't. So I fuss inside my truck to myself...and then share the story later with other drivers...and listen to theirs. I'm also pretty good at putting my hand under the dash (where nobody can see it) and sending the one finger salute. ;) and...yes...to be perfectly honest...I have let a few select idiots see that salute as I'm yelling, "you could have been killed you moron!" Course...I know the rule...even if you cross the center divider and hit me head on...I'm the truck driver...it's always my fault.
I like the idiot of the day saying...mind if I use that one? I have 3 so far today...and I'm just getting started!! Lol
Report as
Feel free. My husband was a trucker, you have my entire support! I'm thinking what people really don't get is that you can't stop of a dime, no make that a football field...I love truck stops. When we traveled, they were such an oasis, clean showers, good food, friendly people. Truck drivers aren't as gallant as they used to be, but that's not their fault. I'd like to get rid of the ones going 70 mph through interstate clovers, but those are the exception.
Report as
Btw...I finally got loaded just a few minutes ago...I didn't say anything, but I did rock the heck out of their scales and waved real big (yes, with one finger)...so I've had my stoop down to the low road moment...now I can smile and drive! Over 20 hours sitting in the middle of chicken poo to get loaded...no facilities for drivers...no access to food...so yeah...I'd flip them off again...in a heartbeat. Now that's out of my system and its time to start looking for the pumping arms of little angels so I can oblige them with a smile and a huge blast of air horns...just that thought makes me feel better.
Report as
20 hours!!!!!! They definitely deserved a "salute". I hope you had something to eat and drink with you. What state are you rolling through?
Report as
Leaving Georgia...heading west!!
Report as
It's funny...I was a bit ticked that I couldn't do a burn out and toss that poo on the jerks as they stood there wondering why I gave the salute!!!
Report as
Yuk! 10 again....can close my eyes and follow you trucker...ha,ha...
Report as
You sure can...but I'm diverting off the 10 in Mobile, taking a walk through the woods to Jackson, MS, and running the 20 back to the 10. I've got no time for Houston and The Alamo and that awful traffic!!! Plus...I'm not in the mood to be THAT patient and nice...the shippers used up all my patience!!
Report as
Well stay safe and remember you always have the Cali traffic to look forward to!!!! ;o) Ya know, if you had a nice big dog and you let it out to "play" with those chickens I bet you wouldn't have been there nearly as long......

Report as
Literally laughing out loud at that!!! That settles it...it's time to get another companion!!
You wanna hear something funny?? ...
I'll take LA traffic over this east coast crap anyday!!!
Report as
Really????? It drives me insane.... bumper to bumper at 20mph and the knuckle heads that think their going to get some place by changing lanes 500 freaking times!!!!! I loved driving in Alabama, so much prettier and no traffic. California freeways are ugly!!!!!! We're taking the 40 when we take Corey to school. My hubby doesn't want to take the 10 because they are having a LOT of problems with the drugs and shooting from Mexico crossing the border so be CAREFUL!!!!! He's a cop so he hears the worst of it but there's a bunch going on that they're not putting out in the news.
Report as

I rolled down my window and made him aware of this only to be met with the finger salute! Eventually, I made my way through voir dire and was selected as a juror. Guess who the defendant was? Is there a decent one you know of between Houston and Mobile( East shore), Sis is going to be going back and forth more often to help with my Ma.

From Mobile jump of the 10 onto the 65 north. Take exit 5B for US 98W. Follow the 98 about 82 miles or so and jump on I 59N to exit 67B for highway 49N towards Jackson. Run that for about 87 miles and you pick up the 20 in Jackson. Going west the 20 ends about 40 miles east of Van Horn, TX and dumps you back on the 10. Misses New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Houston, and the Alamo. Saves a ton in headache relief, too ;)
Report as
Ok I just re-read that. To get from Mobile to Houston bypassing the 10... Do all the same stuff to get to the 20... Get off exit for Tyler, TX (exit 571)
That's hwy 271...follow it 12 miles to loop 323 & go right. Follow loop to hwy 155 & go right. 155 to Palestine and pick up hwy 79 south. Take the 79 to Buffalo, TX and jump on I 45 south to Houston.

Sorry I was late to the party. The most effective remedy for rude people is to laugh at them. They're in it to make you mad, if you not only refuse to get mad (or to let them you see you're mad), they are powerless. Keep your power by not reacting to them. Oh, and BTW, if you just look at them and shake your head like you can't believe what an idiot they are, they will run off the road trying to get to you! Lovely, just lovely.

I've got one even better. I am good friends with fellow liberal Democrats and they have a three year old that can't pronounce p's and uses f's for tr's. Knowing this, after the 2004 presidential election they had him repeat this sentence. George Bush is a dump truck. They recorded him saying this and sent it to Stephanie Miller's Talking Liberally Radio Show. It was the sound effect that she played every time GW butchered the English language! Now that, is worthy of an LOL response!

I laugh and make them look like morons I'm a starter comedian so anything people throw at me I make it funny and turn the joke on them. My jokes and comebacks are funny but can be mean that's what I do.

Consider the source. Some people simply have no shame and make it a point in life to hit below the belt, so to speak. Others are simply not capable of an original thought or self-reflection. In both cases, as bestof said, be disappointed for them instead of in them. Or, you can respond with the passive-aggressive, condescending retort that the fundamentalist Christians use, "I'll pray for you"!

I'll give you an example from my life. When my son made a decision to marry, she was not the person that I would have selected for him. He didn't ask my advice however, and since he was an adult and it was he that was going to be living with her and not I, I politely wished him Mazel tov. She was an adult and certainly didn't feel she needed another mother to correct or critique her. We were coolly polite to one another and realized that he loved us both and if we wished to be in his life we would need to tolerate each other as respectfully as possible.
Then the day came when her love for my son was tested. She ran through fire for him. That was the day she became my beloved daughter. Despite her unpolished exterior, she was indeed a diamond in the rough and I couldn't have been more pleased and proud that my son had been more discerning than I. That's my Jewish mother-in-law story.

Their prayers don't seem to be working out for me. How about you Rees?

Thanks, Koichan. I remember one of your beautiful answers about the commitment we make when we choose to be parents, to always put that child and their happiness above anything else. This doesn't end at 21 or when they get married. It ends when you die.

Report as
I'm not so sure it always ends then? My mom passed on 10/29/1997, I met my beloved on her birthday 12/19/1997. Coincidence...maybe....maybe not!
Report as
@Reesonator...when somebody flips that retort your way answer with...ok...I need the prayers and you need the practice. Usually shuts their pie hole!

Yes good one! I will use it with gusto, and credit you every time:)

Sorry I missed your comments before, nm. That is a lovely story, and I imagine my mother-in-law felt the same about me, lol. She is actually one of the faithful who has been praying for me, my wife, and our kids for many years. And no, it hasn't worked at all. But I believe it gives her a sense of St. Jude-like purpose, so God bless her. As long as she never tells my kids their parents are going to hell, we're okey-dokey.

And koichan, that is just beautiful:)
Report as
Koichan; I just saw your comment. I like to believe that when we die, all the love in our hearts is released into the atmosphere. It finds it's way to those that need it the most. No, I don't think it is a coincidence. Peace.

It happens WAY more than once with this one girl who USED to be my BFF. I get really angry, but I try to avoid fighting when I can, so I just yell and scream at her in my mind and retort back to her and walk away.

Just be righteous in a situation like that. "What would Jesus do?" Do not react negatively back. http://www.biblicalaspiration.blogspot.com/2013/05/gentle-word.html

Well, i try to imagine what i look like in their view, and see if they had a right to say or do what they did. Like, if i was standing in the middle of a hall and someone pushed me aside i would get it because i was in their way.

It's worse when they pretend to be nice to your face & horrible behind your back. And when they think you don't know but you do.

Hi Ravin. Human nature can be fickle as we all learn throughout our lives. Learning who to trust & who not to give the time of day to is a lesson we are learning everyday of our lives. Thanks for asking the question.

Don't get mad get even is a much more productive method. Even imagining paying them back can put a smile on your face lessening the negative impact some could have on you & your health. It's a very good question.
