why is it that when you let a cup of ice sit, when it melts the amount of water you now have doesn't seem to equal the amount of ice that was in the glass?

Because ice doesn#039;t fill up the whole containers volume. The ice is made in shapes and it#039;s impossible to fill up a container exactly the same amount as the one that has water. There is a bunch of gaps in between.

The solid form takes up more space. But in order for a change in state to occur there needs to be heat and so some of the water may be lost in water vapor.
