I have a small bump on the side of my middle finger near the nail. What does that mean?

And how should I treat it? it's been there for several days now.

It could be a callus. I have one too. You get them from friction against skin (i.e. holding a pencil a certain way), among other ways. You can get rid of calluses, but they're actually useful (i.e. that pencil won't be irritating against your finger anymore)

But then again, you said 'small', so it could be a wart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wart (you can check this by seeing if it looks like cauliflower, and you can read the treatment section to see how to get rid of it--there's too many methods to put down here)

But then again, it could be a pimple, which can be treated with various creams you can buy.

Maybe a wart. Look at it under a magnfying glass, if it looks like a cauliflower, it is.
