No, atheism is the 'skepticism' of belief in a deity due to the obvious absence of proof. Many people will claim it as 'rejection,' however, faith itself is not on grounds for rejection, as it is not proven in the first place.
Regarding the court's side of your question, they labeled it a religion for First Amendment purposes.

um... since they are the law of the land Yes. BUT who are they to decide what is and what is not a religion besides holders of authorities. They are just people like you and me. Atheism is more of a persons outlook and view on life. Religion to me is when someone worships or believes in a higher power. Look up the definition of Religion and you will get over 100 answers so its really hard to say.

The court can say whatever they want, but their say doesn't change what something really is. Atheism is a belief, or viewpoint, as I like to call it because they believe that there is no proof of God and that there is a scientific explanation for every phenomena that happens. The definition of religion is a belief in a super powerful being that is worshipped, such as God. Atheists don't believe in God or worship him. So Atheism cannot be a religion. It's simply a term given to those that have that viewpoint.
Well, this is just to protect them under the constitution. No disrespect, but this was the same court that said a tomato was a vegetable for tax purposes. I know this doesn't truly answer if it is a religion or not, but I don't think I would base my conclusion from the courts. After all, I like to refer my beliefs as a relationship more so than a religion. :) God bless GIO.
For legal purposes it is categorized in with religions, because in terms of demographics, it's technically a "religious choice"... the choice to be not believe. But in and of itself it is not a religion.
It is foolish to call Atheism a religion, just as it is foolish to describe all the different things that a person doesn't do as "actions". The branding that believers are trying to falsely impose upon Atheists (who has no believe in any god or religion), is by saying that "non-belief" is a "belief" in itself!! It is as unintelligible as saying that the ability of being without disease, is a disease in itself, or that being without any money, is a synonym of being rich.
There is a gulf of difference between someone who believes in Zeus, and someone who doesn't. The person who doesn't believe in Zeus is not actively doing anything; he is just NOT doing what the Zeus believer is doing. Surely it cannot be truthfully said that you are a "Believer" of the "Non-Pagan Religion" only because you cannot believe in Zeus? Surely NOT.
