What's the difference between hip-hop and rap?

It seems the charts are full of rappers, so is hip-hop dead, because I can't think of one performer of that genre. Or are the musical styles interchangeable.

Hip Hop was the original art form, and today's 'rappers' are so terrible, the term is being lost.

Well, Hip-Hop was as Chinthing said the original version of rap. Rap now however most of the time has more vocals. The vocals also seem to be more "hardcore".

Great point about the "hardcore" part. Thank you!

I think of hip-hop as more of a dance. Rap is similar, but much more vocal. Rapping has pretty much killed hip-hop with its terribleness.

You make a great point about hip-hop being more of a dance. I had overlooked that aspect of the music. Thank you!

These people are fools. Yes, there has been a standstill in the quality of rap but there has always been great lyricisists. It's easier to say that hip hop and rap are ruined than it is to take the time to find some good artists which doesnt take much effort at all

You mention great lyricists and I thought of Public Enemy. They released some great stuff. But there's been no other act that I can think of that can match them.
Rappers today all basically rap about a short list of subjects: women, sex, drugs, bling, etc., and their videos all reflect that.
Thank you for your answer.

You mention great lyricists and I immediately thought of Public Enemy, they released some great stuff well over 20 years ago.
The current list of artists all seem to rap about a short list of subjects that includes: women, drugs, cars, sex and bling.
So basically, not only do the songs all sound the same, but unfortunately, all the videos all look the same.
All these artists all seem to be shooting themselves in the foot because they're basically running in circles.
This is probably the reason why sales have dropped drastically.
Thank you for taking the time to answer.

Technically rap is part of hip hop. Rap is the music, but hip hop is more than music. It is the whole culture. Gold chains, snap-backs, graffiti. It is what comes to mind when you think of the culture.

hmm, when i hear hip-hop i immediately, I think 90s, but i think rap is a more "dirty" version of hip-hop, for example, hip-hop would have some rapping in it, but there is also like pop music. Rap would be just some guy rapping away with the same beat the whole time, like eminem or dre. (yes I know they sometimes feature in pop singers songs, I would consider that hip-hop.)

Rap is like Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Tupac's music. Hip-hop is created with a lot of beats; like Lil Jon, Enrique Iglesias, or Ciara's music for instance.

Thanks for the comparisons, I was thinking hip-hop was dead. I've read that sales of rap music has dropped dramatically, yet the three hip-hop artists you list, gives me the impression that it's music is more accepting of artists from different backgrounds and of women.

The simple answer is that rap is the music, hip hop is the lifestyle. This is the answer you would get (that I have gotten) from African American males that actually listen to the music and live the lifestyle on a daily basis.
