Are most atheists men rather than women?

Report as

I'm from the UK. Hardly anybody gives a hoot about religion there. In fact, that's true of most European countries, Canada, Australia and Japan. Only in America of all the so- called 'advanced' countries do people take god and religion seriously. And, it's changing - quickly! Everytime a priest molests a child or a Southern Baptist opens his mouth on any subject at all, people drop away...

It's my belief that most people are atheists in their heart. Religion is for kids, really...

Hopefully America can join the list of countries you mentioned... not too many atheists here =/

There are probably more than you think Amin. I have a few friends in the Southern states, they go to church every Sunday, but they are Atheist... they just don't feel they can admit it openly so they keep up the pretense.

You know the Atheist community has set up support groups for priests and preachers who lost their faith. There has been quite a large uptake. Atheists are everywhere!

Thanks for the insight... as of now I'm in the same boat. I have to put up the pretense that I'm theist, much of my extended family would not take it well if they found out. In fact, they'd probably tie me up and drag me to their church. For some reason they (my uncles) feel like they're able to control everyone in the family. I've learned to keep my distance over the years.

Because EU is such a great place to be right now!! What else is happening quickly in America... Civil unrest, mass murders, loss of privacy and coming soon.. Personal freedoms! And more!

Well said, Sir John. The religious questions, and the attitude they reflect, are astonishing to me. I'm very happy to live in a place where religion is kept in its cage and let out only for an hour or two on Sundays.
Report as
If only religion was "kept in it's cage" in the US. That'd be a dream come true. *sigh*

He never promised that the cross would not get heavy, and the hill would not be hard to climb. He never offered victories without fighting, but he said help would always come in time. Just remember when your standing in the vally of decision, and the advorsary says give in, just hold on! Our lord will show up right on time, and take you through the fire again.

Thank for all who agreed with me, and even the wizard who doesn't. Sir Duff, they let religion out for an hour or two on Sundays? Lady Gaunt says that about me...

Lady Gaunt? SWMBO? Sir John, you must be the only aristocratic Englishman who's married to a tomato.

I don't get it, Sir Duff. The tomato reference, I mean...

I don't know what the statistics may be, but that has been my experience. It's also very possible that men are just more vocal about what is often viewed as a social stigma.

I just looked up the numbers and that was somewhat of a surprise.

For men: 65.1% are religious, 28.9% not religious, 6% atheists
For women: 78.6% religious, 20.1% not religious, 1.2% atheists.

These numbers are for the U. S. specifically.

Interesting. What source did you get these figure from? I wonder if different sources have similar stats.

Most atheists I've known have been men. I've only personally known one woman who was openly and verbally an atheist. Most non-religious women I've known don't seem to care much one way or the other if there is or isn't a God.

If they don't explicitly believe in a god then they ARE atheists.
Report as
Wrong, Geek. Atheists are people who believe that there is no God. People who aren't sure are agnostic. People who are indifferent to the issue don't have a label.
Report as
Wrong.

Atheism is lack of belief in gods.

Agnosticism isn't a position on belief at all but knowledge. It means that a person thinks it isn't possible to prove or know with certainty a god exists- this person may or may not believe.

Apatheism is people who don't care.

Wrong, get a dictionary. Simple enough.
Report as
Wrong, take a hilosopher class and learn the Greek roots of the words. Simple enough.

Dictionaries are for colloquial terms, and the colloquial misunderstanding of the word agnosticism is "in between or undecided"- yet that was never the actual definition.

It is pretty easy to tell when someone is not versed in a topic- they need to reference a dictionary.
Report as
Right, the definition isn't valid, only your opinion matters, what a joke.
-
You can twist anything you want, any way you want, to make your belief system seen valid. You seem an awful like the stereotype religionists you like to find fault with.

Depends on the area of the world. The tipping of the scale towards men seems to be largely an American phenomenon.

What do you base that on?
Report as
Actual population statistics.
Report as
As opposed to your apparent base of the few people you happen to know.
Report as
The difference is I freely admit the source and limits of my response. I don't make up statistics and than refuse to give a reference to them.
-
Your responses are so unbelievably ridiculous, just stats you make up, definitions you make up, all pure fabrications. Surely you can find something somewhere that gives any credibility to these statistical claims you make, perhaps you can just make that up too.

There's a lot of people who are not affiliated with any church/religion, but will not call themselves Atheists.
I don't know if they fear a backlash from family/friends, but an increasing number of these young people, say they are not religious.

Reactions to coming out as atheist can range from having your family pester you 24/7 about coming back to Jesus, or having them say you are of the devil, completely disowning you and cutting you off from your loves ones. Like cults, they can place you under extreme pressure to stay in, and of that doesn't work they throw you out... and thats just your family!

Women tend to be more social and family orientated, and less confrontational. They are also the ones fighting tooth and nail to keep cohesion. Faced with the potential consequences of coming out as atheist, it just isn't even an option worth thinking about... So i think a great many women probably try not to think about it too hard. I think women are probably better at maintaining cognitive dissonance too.
