Clipping/cutting or cropping ears for looks is cruel, but cropping is done for AKC standards. If a dog doesn't need to get cropped ears (isn't going to be a show dog) then the suffering is for nothing. Same for docked tails.
If everyone truly cared, these methods would be illegal. They should be. At the very least, no one should be able to do this to an animal that won't be a show dog.
And if someone insists, this should always be done by a vet. The ASPCA arrests people who do it themselves.
Cutting shouldn't need to be done though because I've only heard of that for fighting dogs, and fighting dogs is very wrong and stupid.
Doing it to make the dog look tough is no reason to do it either.
originally they were clipped with the belief that they would hear better with upright ears. a good thing for a guard dog. anymore its done because thats an accepted characteristic of the breed. same with docked tails. its part of how a particular dog "should" look. i agree with you though. i have a boxer with unclipped ears and hes adorable
It's all about body language... A docked tail and clipped ears make it very difficult for humans or other dogs to read his body language. Making him seem to appear more aggressive - therefore - making it an effective look for a guard dog... I love the natural look too
