How do we know this is real?

A couple of cases: how do we know what we perceive corresponds with an external reality (Plato's Cave); how do I know I'm not, say, schizophrenic; and how do we know this isn't a fake, controlled, um, thing like North Korea or the Truman Show (I know that isn't real but I think it fits for this example).

I like Morgan Freeman's answer, "it seems real to me."

Rene Decartes answered this question long ago. It should be obvious to people around you if you are schizophrenic.

Plato was describing his belief of what reality is. That was his example of how we perceive reality. It doesn't really match with what you said.

To be able to think is to exist and memory of events of our lives. But we can't be sure if we are merely automatons or a brain existing in some solution that was programmed. We can never be sure 100% of anything for that matter.

If we have a desire to be HAPPY ....we are normal. If not.. We are insane.

That's a fine point. Have you ever had occasion to meet those folks who are so miserable they only derive happiness from infecting others with their misery? I find those to be the most disturbingly insane.

In order to perceive reality we must know what is truth. Reality is more ideas and thought rather than what we see. Once you know truth, everything else falls into place.

I know I am real. However there is a lot of manipulation going on causing falsehood in many ways. Not all is what is appears to be, or who they appear to be. Many things are illusions. It's up to us to figure out reality from fiction, or just enjoy the show. I ate from the tree, I wish I hadn't.

Reality is perception, but reality as we perceive it isn't necessarily the factual truth. What we know is a product of our learning and experience, since each is different, how we view reality differs, as does what we accept as real. Perception is drawn thru our filters, biases and tastes, our realities are colored by them. This is why there are so many different opinions and religious denominations and what makes the world so truly interesting. Reality is what we can prove, what there is no doubt of.

If you think universe was created only before 4 seconds that 4 seconds is what we call 14 billion years. the 4 seconds is too long for everything to take place. that is what we call relativity. time is not absolute but relative. ability to perceive time is a consciousness.

It's called personal reality.you think apples are delicious, I think they taste horrible. Neither can prove the other one wrong. Both our beliefs are real to us.
