Can you make sugar cane on minecraft grow? If so how?

I'm making a map on minecraft Xbox 360 edition, and so I'm making bookshelves for my enchantment table for when I go to the end. Turns out I can't find any villages to raid and thanks to the bookshelves I've already made sugar cane is scarce. If I can't grow them I'll just go against the Ender dragon pumpkin-head on. If I can, please tell me how!!! BTW, this is on survival so no creative mode talk.

It might not grow but to plant it you need a sand block by the water.

water source right next to dirt
the sugar cane goes in the dirt
and it gets about 2-3 blocks high depending on how long you wait

Block by water is where you need to plant it or with bonemeal

Jorgensen

You can't make it grow with bonemeal, like you can with trees and wheat, the only way to make sugar cane grow, is to plant it by water and wait for it to grow.
