Scam you out of money...they are good at mind tricks and can get you to believe what they want. Some things are to the point and helpful just like talking to anyone who cares about what you have to say but psychologist are just science drop outs who took the easy route in finding a job still.

Help you to open up and clear your mind of things that are depressing you ! Much better than a Doctor throwing some pills at you . More expensive, but if you're having problems and can't express them to anyone, then this is the person to see and get your problems out in the open and hopefully cured.

They can help you work through things causing you problems, like past or current abuse, or traumatic events.

My friend needs therapy because she's afraid of clowns. She saw a picture of one in her textbook and started crying. The class laughed at her and her friend was telling them she was afraid of clowns and to stop laughing. (I'm not in her class).

Something like that, they can help somewhat. There are YouTube videos of people going through that treatment, and eventually will have them talking to real clowns.

a GOOD therapist/counselor/psychologist/shrink will:

ask questions that need to be asked.

make observations that need to be made.

help you work thru emotionally traumatic stuff.

suggest prescriptions to no more than 5% of his/her patients.

help you see the big picture.

be truthful to a fault. calls you on your own bs.

will let you know when it's time to stop seeing them either because you have accomplished whatever you needed to do or because they are not the person to continue to the next step with.
