Blacks really didn't get a school education. Very few were taught to read and write. For most their education was one of trades. They learned how do jobs that needed to be done on the plantations.
As for whites it really depended on their station in life. Those that had money were educated, those that did not had to learn trades. Some whites on got a 4th grade education. Just enough to learn to read, write and do basic math, then started to work in the family business.
