What could be wrong with me?

I've noticed this goes away and comes back every now and then. When I'm trying to sleep, I will start coughing and it won't get better until I drink some water. Sometimes even after I drink water, it still doesn't go away. It doesn't happen to me during the day; it only happens to me at night when I'm trying to sleep.

Are you asleep or almost asleep and waking up coughing? Or is it you are in bed trying to fall asleep and you need to cough? The reason I ask is the first could be an indication of a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea. The other could mean you have an allergy to something in your bedroom or something like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Just speculating here, your best bet is to talk with your family doctor.

I have that problem if I've gotten dehydrated during the day. Consciously increasing my fluid intake eliminated the problem for me.
