Should I drink protein before or after a workout?

Report as

After because your muscles are worn out and when they're recuperating the protein will help them grow.

Its best to drink a protein shake after a workout because it helps rebuild muscle that you used during a workout

i do 'no bull training' and you workout and do a whole bunch of workouts and lifting and all these type of things to loose weight and get in shape, he told us right after the work out you should eat fruit than don't eat anything like food wise for an hour .

You should actually drink Wild Turkey before, after, and during your workout. The turkey provides plenty of protein, plus your workout will be much more interesting.

According to what i have read in health and fitness magazines, you must not eat anything for at least 30 minutes before a Physical workout ,and must also wait 30 minutes after your work out before eating due to digestion and body stress.other than that you can take your protein any time except too close to sleep time.

Drinking protein before a workout would be like turning on the tv before it's plugged in. You need to work out and damage your muscles for the protein to repair them and get stronger.

Don't take protein before a workout, get your hands on some pre workout nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a natural substance produced by the body. Once the body runs out it, muscular growth is reduced greatly. Taking this maximizes the duration of effective exercise. Nitric oxide is not essential, but it can be compared to a risk free and natural steroid. It is worth researching. Take protein after a workout, but it can be taken up to ten hours after a workout and still be effective.

In terms of protein, I like the system of taking branched chain amino acids about 20 - 30 minutes before the workout to aid in preventing or minimizing going into a catabolic state. Then ingest a simple carbohydrate and another dose of branched chain amino acids within 30 to 45 minutes after. Post activity the simple carbohydrates aka simple sugars are the most important of the two however. The bodies preferred type and most efficient form of carbohydrate to replenish glucose stores that have been depleted, more so from high intensity training /anaerobic exercise are simple carbs - again within 30 - 45 minutes while the body's absorption rate of glucose/glycogen replenishment is at it's highest. If nothing is ingested within that time frame nor well beyond it - many people wait too long after the workout to ingest something - body's level of the stress hormone cortisol increases and is released into the bloodstream. Increased cortisol levels promote fat storage, as well as simply cause stress, including stressing out the nervous system. Overall, if one has a reasonably healthy diet already, what's ingested directly after the workout is the more critical.

The branched chain amino acids are the only amino acids within the whole amino acid chain that get absorbed and put to work within the muscle tissues "literally" within as little as 20 minutes of ingestion. This supports the resistance of muscle breakdown during high intensity exercise. Taken directly after they support faster recovery and and helps prevent a catabolic state, Ingesting a balanced meal of complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fat is appropriate up to 90 minutes to two hours after the workout (if the above guidelines) are followed. The general bulk of the rebuilding process of lean mass/muscle begins about two hours after high intensity training. So it's actually ok with no negative effect to not ingest protein immediately after training. However it should be ingested a little before the two hour mark. People are very obsessed with protein intake, however the appropriate, most usable and most needed intake after the workout is simple carbs within 30 to 45 minutes to replenish depleted glucose/glycogen first while absorption is high, then make sure you ingest quality protein with your meal a little later. The replenishment of glucose stores is directly related to your body's stored available energy to efficiently produce ATP during your next high intensity workout. This is basic, scientifically proven, tested, and simply how the body works.

both, before for energy and to help your muscles stay "warm" (active) and after to help recover your energy and help your muscles repair themselves and relax
