Why don't people in insane asylums talk?

I've been watching alot of movies and shows involving crazy people. they would talk normally but once they been by themselves and visitors come, why don't they talk? is this how crazy people normally act?

There are people that talk, some more than others. Some not at all. If they don't talk, generally they are highly medicated or it is a personal choice/mental issue.

They do, but they're talking to themselves.

Maybe they do. It's safest not to take all things in films as gospel: everybody is different, so maybe some people in asylums will talk to others, some to themselves, and some not at all.

Don't believe everything you see on tv haha! I'm sure they do talk or they wouldn't be there.

Either way, they are always listening, and observing. They have a tendency to respond in kind to the manner in which they are treated: verbally and physically. Well documented.
