I just got my 3rd gen. ipod to work yesterday after two years of it being broken, but how do I update it?

The ipod is reset to factory settings but I cannot download anything. I downloaded itunes on my asus windows 8 laptop but now it will not open itunes, i even tried uninstalling than redoing it and it still wont open the app store keeps telling me I need to update the ipod but it wont.

To update the iPod 3rd generation, run iTunes and connect the iPod to the computer. Locate the iPod from iTunes source list on the left side of the iTunes window. Put it in DFU mode, then upgrade it on iTunes.
