What man VOWED to return after voluntary death to tell the world what's on the other side? 18th, 19th century maybe earlier.

I once read about a man sometime in history who voluntarily let doctors put him to death in order to see what's on the other side - life after. He vowed to return and reveal it to the world, but no one's heard from him since. I can't remember where i read it or who it was but it's a true story. Maybe in the 18th or 19th century, maybe earlier. Thought is was pretty funny though. :-)

Houdini (who died on 10-31-1926) famously vowed to return if it was possible. But he did not "voluntarily let doctors put him to death".

Beat me to it:) Big star.

He also left a "secret phrase" with his family ... to show if any "spirit medium" could contact him, after death. None have yet successfully passed that test.

We all know what that means.

BK: Thank you

WOR: Yes I am aware of that as well. I read a book a few years ago about him that was fascinating:
"The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Super Hero"

It was the great magician Houdini who made a vow to his wife that upon his death he would send a message to her from the other side. Unfortunately no communication was either sent or received.

There was a movie back in the 1980's called Flatliners in which a group of med students 'killed' eachother then brought them back in order to see what was on 'the other side'. Julia Roberts, Kieffer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, Kevin Bacon and Billy Baldwin. Maybe thats what youre thinking of.
