Why did the Treyvon Martin/Zimmerman case gain so much publicity?

the same week an unarmed Caucasian 19 year old was murdered by a 30 year old black male, and around the same time a 6 months pregnant white woman was beaten within an inch of her life by black gang members. none of these stories made it past local news. I can draw my own conclusions, but I'm hoping there are reasons out there beyond the ones I fear.

Because the public was so interested in this case. I know there are many people like yourself who love to point out all the cases they believe the media ignored (while, of course, citing public apathy and a Machiavellian media conspiracy as the reason for such selective reporting), but I always want to ask the question, How did YOU find out about those cases? Did they come to you in a psychic flash? Did you know of them because you were there? Or did you read about them on a website or blog? The media jumps on the stories that grab the public's attention, and moreover, these days, the media IS the public. That's right, I said it. WE are the media. I heard about all the cases you listed about a thousand times just this last week, mostly from people on social media sites citing them for some reason or other. It's almost a mantra, yet everyone claims that these cases are a big secret. There also seem to be a lot of people who think the heavy coverage of this story over other stories and Zimmerman's Latino ethnicity make a point of some sort, and the inferences run wild. Bottom line: there is no media conspiracy. Since the media is a human institution, there is always an agenda, but it's funny how people like to only point that out when the media's agenda doesn't coincide with theirs. I never seem to hear fans of conservative media complain about Rush Limbaugh's agenda.

You do point out that there is an agenda in the media. they choose everything they print, not us. But why did the media make this about race, when everyone said it wasn't??
Report as
Both have points. And if I may rebut, Rush Limbaugh is one source which can be ignored, whereas this story was covered on nearly all channels.
Report as
The media definitely has an agenda: getting viewers and readers. And they choose the stories they cover based on what they think their audience will want to know about. Look, I hate it that the kind of sandwich Justin Bieber had for lunch is considered newsworthy, but if nobody cared, the media wouldn't consider it news. The media is just a glorified branch of the entertainment industry, and that is the same across the board.
Report as
And Rush covered this story every bit as much as everyone else.

Because I guess it's normal for white people to get beaten up, raped, and killed these days. Then a black kid gets shot in purposely self-defense(don't start a debate but I'm just saying this because this is what the court chose as the verdict) by a Spanish guy and then the entire nation is rioting and all this crap. Sorry guys, but the court is done with the case. And it seems that there will never be perfect equality between races. When push comes to shove, it feels like we all do equally bad things to each other.

Because the press & those that rely on keeping the races apart to survive saw an opportunity to do so. He's of Hispanic dissent, not good enough let's make him white & racist. Great idea, we'll show pictures of this kid from years ago, make Zimmerman afraid of black people & just shot this poor child. Wrong all over the place & when the verdict came down the jury did the right thing, the guy was fighting in self defense. Al & Jesse went into instant repair. The guilty white man may actually be an innocent Hispanic. Jackson wants it looked into further, I guess that the white race goes up by 1 again. In Chicago alone their were numerous killings during the trial, 1 killing a mother & child, not mentioned anywhere, why? Black on black, guess those folks don't matter. Another was a 5 year old kid shot right there on the sidewalk next to his bike, he means nothing too.Sad, our leaders don't care about our children, they need to fan the fires of racism to keep their jobs. Is Sharpton really a minister? Their was the white male beaten thrown in front of a car & killed by 4 black men, but that's not a hate crime-hmmm

Because if the media were to announce those other cases, it would offend blacks. But whenever a white person does something to a black, it appears all over the news. Telling everyone about those other cases isn't politically correct. Stupidity.

Because Treyvon, being black, was totally innocent of all wrong doing (definately NOT a smart mouthed gangbanger who was at least equally responsible for escalating the confrontation because, being black, he was incapable of doing that sort of thing of course) innocent little boy just standing there minding his own business when a vicious hispanic (not white but lighter than black so hes instantly news) vigilante shot him down with no provication whatsoever.
For real: Vigilantism is wrong and people cant be allowed to do that sort if thing but Treyvon wasnt the poor innocent child the ACLU and the like want every to accept. Treyvon was a punk gangbanger and im sure he said and did many of the things that were brought out it court. But it doesnt matter because he was black and theyre all innocent, gangbanger or not.

"Innocent little boy" ? His criminal record was not allowed into this case but it will be if they continue. To help you, you should read it.

@jakoa - learn to recognize sarcasm. Treyvon was definately part of the problem. He didnt deserve to be killed but Zimmerman shouldnt have been on trial for murder either. At worst it was manslaughter or aggravated assault. PROVOKED aggravated assault. POSSIBLY a case could even be made for second degree murder. But the ACLU and its big whigs like Jesse Jackson demand a murder trial. Had Zimmerman been charged with a lesser, more deserved charge he might actually be in jail now instead of free. But noooooooo the radicals gotta make it into a murder spectacle.

Because it was a white on black crime. Our country still has a long way to go to erase the past. For at least 250 years blacks were treated differently. They were made to use separate doors, bathrooms, schools, sit at the back of a bus and the list goes on forever. They may be able to forgive but it will take a long time to forget the past. Civil rights is not a new issue and some still have a very heavy heart (prejudice) for the way their ancestors were treated by whites.

Zimmerman is Hispanic not White. Although the media tried to make it that way.
Report as
I'm aware that Zimmerman is Hispanic but they are treating this situation as if he were white. Blacks killing blacks has become the norm which is why it is not publicized. At least 2000 teens have been killed since And not much has been said. I feel for the families because it's never easy to lose a love one in such a violate way.

i think it was because they believed that the shooter shot a teenage unarmed boy. but i believe that there are more cases where the perpetrator is black and the victim is white there is slot of publicly

It's more common for the media to bury the story, if its black on white. Black on white crime is 6 or 7 times higher than white on black. they don't want to tell that story. The story of the Zimmerman trial could easily have been a black man beating a white man, but that would have been buried.

Because the media has an agenda. All publicy, all media, is there because its CHOSEN. The media chooses what is it's product, and what it wants to report on and how. The facts of this case never fit the preferred media product, so they made it about race when all parties said the trial was NEVER about race.
The major problem of the black community is black-on-black crime; 97% of black crime is black-on-black. But that is completely ignored by media; it's not their agenda. To keep race hatred stirred (race hatred sells papers - pulls eyeballs) they choose white-on-black crime, and even when Zimmerman identified himself as Hispanic, they had to invent a previously unknown category of white Hispanic to make this fit their template.
It's a difficult time to be a reporter-- nobody trusts your product. The vast majority of America knows the jury got the verdict right; it's the media that continues to try to sell a counter-factual condition.

The media and race baiters initially thought he was white because his name was Zimmerman. They started the frenzy before they found out he was not white. Then it was too late to stop it. For weeks they continued to say it was a racist act. They even doctored the 911 tapes to back up their assertions.
