HTML Made Easy by Paul Browning is the one I can really recommend. but there are other ones hat might help you like:

Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Web Graphics by Jennifer Niederst Robbins

HTML and CSS for Beginners with HTML5 by Mr. Mark Lassoff and

HTML, XHTML, and CSS, Sixth Edition by Elizabeth Castro

As StarDance said, there are the "For Dummies" books, which I don't like, but it's your choise. :)

I've always found the "Dummies" books the best way to learn anything about computers...currently using "WordPress for Dummies" to get some blogs up and running!

You, may want to learn by video tutorials , as most of web developer do, including me(By the way ,I only made websites for college projects.)
ANYWAY,
thenewboston vedios tutorials are the best , bucky reberts and alex garret are best teachers, and html is the simplest and easiest language to learn , you should consider learning html5 after you done with your xhtml.

lynda and w3schoos are also good options, but I recommed thenewboston.
Good luck
