How does the military test and place personnel into the roles they serve? Is this type of testing available in the civilian world?

They take a written test and depending on your score is where you can be placed. Also it depends what mos (job ) is open for that rank. My husband was a recruiter for 3 yrs. he is infantry and decided to do what's called a b billet so for 3 yrs you can have a different mos. within your mos you can change too. He has been on the ground patrol, (when he first joined) then went to a few others recruiting, mortars, training afghan police (pmt =police mentoring team) and now he is security forces so if something happens at an embassy he is first to go. So you can have many jobs.

It seems this test is extremely instrumental in deciding ones future in the military and as such, could such a test be administered in schools for the civilian world. I'm in my latter 50's and do not have military experience, but very curious in this application for young people to gain insight into their future.

Yes when I was In high school they offered the class but I was in a high area for military because my step dad was a marine. But each area has a recruiter and each recruiter is in charge of schools. So off this test they call the kids. That's just a Pre test though to see scores. The real test is only given at a recruiting station and its only part if the process to join you also have to pass a pft (physical fitness test) and drug test. Each branch has its own test and what you need to do to qualify.

practice tests can be found online, but the ASVAB can only be taken once (as far as i know) and it tells the them what kind of skills you possess. and then gives you possible position opportunities

There is a practice test that is being given to them. They then get rated and this tells them what skills each one of them has. What you get at the end chooses the position that you should be given.

They had a test that they used to give in high school that was similar to the ASVAB. I took it and it said I should be a podiatrist. I own and operate an A/C company now. Not exactly spot on, plus I don't like touching people's feet.
