An irony to this is The governor of NJ had the same problem, but has state issued health coverage. See if there are any programs that your dad can be included in for the medical help he deserves. Try contacting your nearby community hospital for a start. It is commendable that you are taking the time for your dad. It's not about dieting and willpower, but getting to the cause, or finding a solution.
Calories in, Calories out. My husband and I use the myfitnesspal app to track our calories and we lost over 100 lbs in a year and kept it off for over 3 years so far. Eat whatever you want just make sure to track it. He needs to want to do it or it won't work. If you cook for him I would look up lower calorie nutrient dense recipes. Good luck. :)
Tell your dad I lost 75 pounds last year and have kept it off. No special food, no special diet, no gym membership. My monthly food budget didn't even change. This isn't magic or even rocket science, just common sense and consistency .
