Any breed of dog will be great for your family, since every dog is different! However, because you have a small child around, depending on how rough he is, you might want to say no to smaller dogs. Your brother might accidently hurt them. Have fun finding the best friend ever for your family!
Labs, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies and Hungarian Vizslas are usually pretty good with kids. So are some other breeds. I'd stay away from most Terriers. They can be great but sometimes they can get aggressive if they think they need to protect their owners or themselves. It really depends on the individual dog too. I had a Vizsla Lab mix who was great with kids. They could pull on his ears hit him or whatever and he would just stand there smiling with his tongue hanging out. When they would throw a ball or something he'd go right into play mode. You need to be careful though not to let kids pull on the dogs ears or tail or hit the dog though because they need to learn how to play nice. Any dog could get tired of that or feel threatened and bark or bite.
