What is religion?

My mother is having what she calls a "spiritual crisis" as neither of us are very religious. She was baptized and I was not. I have never been to a Church or anything so I have developed a bit of a theory... I think that God exists, even if it's because everybody seems to think he does. God (as Jesus Christ) Allah... all of that is real because so many people believe.

God is a being that is supposed to love us. Every human being. Unconditionally. It doesn't matter what you call him, or if there's more than one. They all pretty much have the same values. Don't lie, be kind to others, try to help people in need... It's something that furthers society and makes the world a better place.

But, what do you think religion/spirituality is?

Its a mistake. We could develop a great values system from watching my little pony. Only the bible and koran offers unfettered hate for non-believers and gays and is above scrutiny. Religion is the antithesis to humanities good fortune, prosperity and ethical apex.

I have always been told that "Religion is mans way of defining and understanding god and his mysterious ways".

I'm glad you came up with that yourself! you ARE catholic if you believe in God. I think that religion is the ability to put faith in the impossible. I think that all religions get some parts right, but i think that (this is slightly biased) Catholics are right in believing in one God and Jesus. If you ask me, practicing ANY religion is better than none

Religion = Doctrine (guidelines) that you follow/believe.
Spirituality = Personal (wish I could underline that) relationship with the Lord (God/Jesus/Holy Spirit/Angels etc).
Believing in God doesn't mean that you're a Catholic. Many 'religion' followers believe in God/Jesus/Holy Spirit (also known as the Trinity). Believing in the Gospel (Jesus died for your sin) however, does entitle you to claim that you are a Christian. Christianity is not a religion, it's a belief system. You can be Christian AND be one of many denominations (Baptist/Catholic/Lutheran etc.) or claim no religion (Non-Denominational).

Religion is the belief system you follow and guide your life around. The problem with Christianity is that it is exclusive. If you think Jesus was correct in what He said and who He claimed to be, then all other religions are false. If any other religion is true, then Christianity is false. You cannot combine Christianity and anything else.

Nor is something true simply because a lot of people believe it is true. A thing is true or not, all on its own, regardless of whether anyone believes it or not. For instance, for many years it was believes that the sun, moon, planets and all stars rotated around the earth. "Everyone" believed it. Nevertheless, it was not true.

If God is real, then He is real no matter what anyone believes.

Does God love us? Yes. But that does not mean approval or feeling good about us. That means He cares for us deeply and passionately. Emotions/feelings come and go, but the decision to commit is what love is, and that remains.
