Thanks I happen to be a military surplus gun guy. I also reenact WW2 as an SS Soldier and I happen to reenact the Vietnam War and supposed to be doing Civil War for the Confederacy next year.

the m1 Grand played a big role in WWII. but there are many more that were used.

They used the M1911 for sure, it was the standard issue pistol, I think they used the "Thomson"

By "They" I suppose you mean America, right? If that is the case, then the U.S rifle caliber .30 M1 Garand, the M1928a1 Thompson submachine-gun, Thompson M1A1, Colt M1911, and the Browning 1918a1-3 B.A.R are the main firearms you are most likely looking for. I hope this helps

Which country? Many guns as well as other weapons were used, it is all dependant who (and how many soldiers) was doing the fighting and what there stance was economically (those from the US used twice as many types of machine gun to those who were fighting sent from Thailand for example).
The US commonly used over 30 different sorts of gun, to list them all for every country would take a while, though the wonderful Wikipedia has covered it well. The guns that were used are listed on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_World_War_II_infantry_weapons

WWII was fought with the updated versions of those in WWI.
