To upgrade to Windows 8, you must have any of the previous versions of Windows like Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your computer. If you happened to have formatted your hard drive, you will not be able to use a product key to upgrade. It could be also a different part of Windows is installed on your PC. You can get more help from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/why-activate-windows.

Using activators is illegal and may cause you legal trouble. In simple words you might have to pay fine or go to jail if the police catches you. You better install a variant of Linux OS like Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com) which is free and also better in many ways than Windows 8.
