Can I clean brake dust off my rims with brake parts cleaner
Use the proper cleaner for the job.
BE CAREFUL. the asbestos dust is cancerous. Wear a face mask and rubber gloves. Thoroughly wash your hands, arms, face and neck afterwards.Word of warning: if your rims are painted it will probably take off the paint too. and any other paint you accidentially get it on. They sell a specific soap at the auto parts store to clean rims off. I am not sure what chemical it has in it, but I would try that first.If you have aluminum rims beware, the brake cleaner may take off the clear plastic coating.
Better to buy a commercial "rim" cleaner. This is detergent, but will loosen the brake dust, and when you flush it off is not as dangerous.
