First period questions. Any tips?

okay so I'm 13 turning 14 in 2 months, and I've been experiencing signs of my period since 5th grade. almost in 8th grade now, I finally got my first period today. it was a big surprise, and I already talked to my mom and got pads and tampons. okay so I have a couple of questions. 1. my period was brown, and I mean like dark brown, with red mixed in. it was definitely from, you know... up front, since it was towards the front of my underwear. and it was mixed with discharge. I also got a lot of it. enough to cover the entire front half of my underwear, which is what shocked me most. anyways, how long will it be brown before it turns more of a red color? 2. will my period now last a couple of days, or go away for months like some people have. 3. I'm a XCC runner, and I have practices daily starting August 12th. what should I do about my period and XCC, like if I'm not sure I'm actually on my period, I shouldn't use a tampon, right? so what should I do. and lastly 4. what should I do about school in a month. my period will still be irregular, so what should I wear/bring to school to be prepared? all tips and advice appreciated, thanks! (:

Try to stay away from light colored bottoms around your time.Find some sort of pattern with when you get it and about when it stops so you can plan for the next month.Keep a small bag or purse/pouch at the bottom of your backpack with pads and tampons in at all times just in case keep like 3 of each and a pair of underwear just in case.If you have a Gym locker keep a pair of jeans or something in there as well just to be safe. It's bad when you don't realize you get it and bleed through
I'm not exactly sure what the brown is but I had it too.I still have it sometimes
Some people only have their period for a few days but get it monthly while others get it for a few days but don't have it for a few months.I guess it just depends on the person.Like I said, find how long it is the first time and wait for next month. If you get it around the same time then there you go
If you aren't actually on your period yet but you're worried you might get it then put in a panty liner and talk to your coach.I'm sure he/she has dealt with periods before. They should know exactly what to do about it.I'm sure it may be awkward to talk about but it's better to get it over with now than having a mess later

For running and stuff, get the sports tampons. If you're not comfortable with tampons, wear pads. For school, they make little pouches that you can put pads and tampons in. If you expirence cramps, i recommend getting Midol. It works. Hope i helped (:

1.) Mine were always dark, they never look too much like the kind of bleeding you do when you cut yourself. 2.) Mine lasted for 5 days and came every 28 days like clockwork after my first one at age 11. 3.) Generally when you aren't actually having your period, you shouldn't wear a tampon or a pad. 4.) Always keep feminine supplies in your locker, just to be on the safe side.
