How do I write an interesting novel?

I'm not asking anybody to give me their ideas (because obviously writers keep their good ideas to themselves), but I have absolutely no idea what to do or where to start.

Get a good idea on a plot that will not only interest others but will also interest you so you don't end up abandoning your story. Develop how your character will act, look, and what they are working for in the story. Map out the major details that will happen like during the climax and resolution. Avoid using lengthy or boring dialogue and descriptions. Use proper phrasing that is adequate and interesting. Be sure that your opening paragraph has an interesting hook to keep the readers going. Don't excessively bounce around point of views. And know what things to cut out of your story, like boring travel scenes, character A telling character B about something we just saw happening to character A, and phrases like “said happily” — it’s much better to say “bubbled” or “chortled.

Create a reader. Not you, not your friends. Make that reader well, with likes and dislikes and a family situation. Then write your story, every time checking, "would ___ approve of what I'm writing right now?", substituting the ___ for the name of your reader. This will improve your writing tremendously.

Write about what you know - places you have been.
