The phrase man in the moon can refer to a person who has bee excluded from a community or group. The phrase is also believed to refer to a person who banished to the moon for a while after he did a criminal act.

The dark spots on the Moon (caused by meteor impacts and lava coming up to the surface and quickly cooling) make it look like a face.
