Why do you have to turn off electrical devices when you're taking off and landing on a plane.

They're afraid your devices might interfere with the planes electrical instruments and controls. Although it makes me wonder who's building airliners that can be taken down with an iPod.

The rules are intended to be overly protective. Better to err on the side of caution than to risk a catastrophe. Testing has shown what we all know is true: phones and iPads don't interfere with airplane controls. Less stringent rules are being worked on.

They have actually proven that a person with a laptop and a transmitter can duplicate the signal that a GPS sends, and can change the position of a plane or a ship that is on autopilot.
