You can go to film school or you can become self taught. Many film directors started out working on set as production assistants. They do this because to join the Directors Guild you have to earn your way up the ranks. Others teach themselves how to make movies and they make short films to submit to film festivals to show what they are capable of. The problem with some film schools is they teach theory and little hands on. However, some films schools like those at NYU, USCL, UNC School of Arts and several others in the country offer hands on training and often with working film people popping in to give tips. You actually have to go to film school where you will be taught the various aspects of film directing and the finer details. After this, you can start filming a movie if you have the funds and then enter the finished product in a film festival. Check out the details on

Film school is only a viable option if they use practical hands on teaching techniques. 90% of those who get film degrees from a school teaching film theory based filmmaking do not do nearly as much in the industry after graduation. You can make a film without going to film school. And you do not enter your film in any festival. You submit it for consideration and hope they accept it. Otherwise you are talking about contests and not film festivals.
