What does it mean when a movie or book is "uninspired"?

I hear critic say that all the time, "uninspired" about crappy movies, what does it mean? This kind of stuff really helps in English class. We review books & movies & crap. I just read a lot of critic reviews & learn from them. But still think with my own opinion of course. I just pay attention to the format & stuff that critics use.

The idea of inspiration in the creative arts, including writing, goes back to the days when we thought that original ideas were given to us by gods or spirits. These days, new-agers say that we are "channelling" a spirit.

Rudyard Kipling said that if he didn't write with purple ink on green paper his "daemon" wouldn't talk to him. He was kidding about the demon, of course, but not about needing special materials to awaken his creativity.

"Inspired" and "uninspired" are overused by critics but really mean, as VikiH52 pointed out, that there are few original ideas in the work. It is humdrum, pedestrian, dull, trite, boring.

An example: When Richard Ianelli defined the word "blurt" as setting the mouth in first gear while the mind is still idling; or when he said that "chastity" was an ancient type of belt that indirectly held up the trousers, that was inspired.

it is the contrary of inspired. When you like a book and it has you inspired ( say you end up wanting to do the same thing or you want to act the same way) well uninspired means the contrary. Critics will use that word to not say that the book sucked ( by their opinion)

An uninspired book or movie follows a over used pattern and doesn't really do much other than follow the pattern. It's kinda like doing a connect the dots and trying to call it art.

To me, it would indicate that the story is a boring one, dull and heavy with old recycled ideas.

Its usually not a good well scripted movie or book. Something that doesn't hold your attention to long.
