Try the white part of a banana peel. Put the white side down over the piece of imbedded wood for 15 minutes. This should draw the piece up to the skins surface so you can grab with tweezers. Then clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. Then put neosporen on the wound. If that doesn't work, go to doctors.
Absolutely positively YES!!!! This happened to my mother when I was a child. It became infected and eventually had to have surgery. She almost lost her foot over a tooth pick. Tooth picks became illegal at our house.
I stepped on a toothpick today - on my son's 18th birthday It while preparing to make sandwiches for him and his friends. Found the toothpick under the table - swore and picked it up thinking, "Thank goodness no one stepped on it!" Dropped it as I was throwing it away, didn't see where it went and stepped on it while I was trying to avoid doing just that! Went all the way to my heal bone. Broke off the top half and 45 minutes later was finally able to get a good enough grip to pull the rest of it out. I had to pull it out slowly because toothpicks get fatter in the middle. The piece I pulled out was almost a whole inch long! It's Sunday, December 23 and I can't go to urgent care or to the ER for a stupid splinter. Yowls!
@Superwonderphil (great name BTW) How do you step on a toothpick? Open mouth, insert foot. Or, pick your teeth with your toes or vise versa. :-)
