Hello,i got several questions about some english phrase usages
1.in the sentence 'Alpine villages tended to be impoverished settlements' what does the verb'tend'means? 2.'such inns as there were were generally dirty' ,in my view ,such inns were ------ is clearly for us,'there were'is not needed, whats the hell the function of it 'there were'. 3.'the food local cheese accompanied by bread' we know the full sentence is 'the food local cheese was accompanied by bread' was' is deleted here,i just wanna know on which condition can we delete AuxiliaryVerb like 'was' , 4 .we usually see headline on newspaper like' sb killed in somewhere' i wanna know that means one killed another or one was killed by others.if sb was killed ,why isnt the headline 'sb was killed------- '.the similar instance like 'sb arrested ----'sometimes its hard for me to understand clearly.
